What Is A Blem Bat? A Simple Explanation.

What Is A Blem Bat? A Simple Explanation.

What exactly is a blem bat? Blem bats, short for blemished bats, are a particular kind of baseball bat or softball bat that will have minor cosmetic imperfections or very small flaws. This can mean any number of things, such as a small nick, a paint run, knot marks, an unfinished paint job, a smudge, or even something as simple as a logo being in the wrong spot. Typically, it is so minor that it is not noticeable at first glance. The best part? Just because a bat is blemished doesn’t mean it will affect its performance or integrity in any way. Blem bats are a way for players to get a high-end bat at a closeout price. You will still get a top-of-the-line, extremely sturdy bat that will perform day in and day out. Keep in mind that it is not recommended to use a blem bat in game but rather for batting practice and cage hitting. Blemished baseball bats and blemished softball bats provide any player with great value, but there is risk involved. They are commonly sold as is and do not come with a warranty. But, since the reason is generally cosmetic that shouldn’t matter after a few weeks of BP anyway.

Blem bats are the most popular in the wood bat industry. Some wood baseball bat companies, such as Louisville Slugger or Marucci, offer blem bats at a discounted price. For example, Marucci has extremely high standards when it comes to the creation of their wood bats and when they don’t measure up to those standards, they will label the bat a blemished bat or a “Pro Cut.” Marucci consistently comes out with four of the best “blemished” bats in the business:

The pro cut models are not technically blem bats. These models are bats that Marucci was making for a Major League player but they did not meet their exact specifications. There is a reason Marucci has become MLB's favorite bat. These Pro Cut wood baseball bats consist of flawless maple wood with consistency and elite craftsmanship. Tiny discrepancies in the length, weight, balance point, handle, or knob shape are the cause for these wood bats to be pulled from a player’s order and sold as “Pro Cuts.” The only downside is you have no control over the turn model on these wood bats. The length and color are the only variables that can be controlled. The bottom line is you can get a big-league bat for a fraction of the cost of pro models.

On the other hand, the Marucci maple wood blem bat is a great option for any player. They are from assorted patterns on Marucci's production line and still come with the best features Marucci has to offer. While there is a Blem logo across the barrel, it will still come bone-rubbed for extreme hardness. And that's not all. Marucci blem bats will also have a pro-cupped end to improve the overall balance and increase exit velocity. Similar to the pro cuts, length, and color are the only characteristics you can control. But don't let that deter you because blem bats are an excellent choice for both practice and cage work.
