Bat Duel: Marucci AP5 vs. Marucci CUTCH22

Written by Marcus A | Sep 23, 2013 10:40:02 AM

Marucci has a number of wood Pro Models, most of which they do not even publicly release due to the high volume of pro players who swing their own custom bat. Of the models that they do make available, the AP5 and CUTCH22 are two of their most popular.

Marucci bats are 100% handmade in small batches from an original design, then finished and detailed by hand. Each model is made to exact specifications - maximizing both balance and ease of handling. Similar to all-time greats Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Marucci opts to bone rub each one of their bats before they apply the finish. Bone rubbing closes the pores in the wood, thus making the wood harder and more durable.

Marucci AP5 Maple Wood Bat

The Marucci AP5 has been one of the best selling Marucci Wood Bats since it made its debut. Designed for All-Star and former National League MVP Albert Pujols, the AP5 was cut to meet his exact specifications.
  • Bone rubbed Maple wood
  • 2 ½” barrel diameter
  • 29/32” handle
  • Approximate -3 length to weight ratio
  • Balanced swing weight
  • Large barrel
  • Pro cupped end
  • Tapered handle
  • Flared knob

Marucci CUTCH22 Maple Wood Bat

One of the newer additions to the Marucci pro line is the CUTCH22, designed for Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen. The main difference between this bat and the AP5 is the tapered knob featured on the CUTCH22. The tapered knob allows you to grip the bat slightly lower than a normal flared knob will.
  • Bone rubbed Maple wood
  • 31/32” handle
  • Approximate -3 length to weight ratio
  • Balanced swing weight
  • Large barrel
  • Pro cupped end
  • Tapered handle
  • Tapered knob

Both the AP5 and CUTCH22 Pro Models allow hitters who prefer a balanced feel to swing a larger barrel. The tapered handle distributes the weight of the barrel evenly throughout the bat so hitters have complete control of their swing from the load all the way through the zone.
