Some of the most rewarding experiences in baseball happen in the field; diving for a ball full extension to make a spectacular play to save a run or standing in at second base with a runner bearing down on you to turn the double play that gets your team out of a bases loaded jam are just a few of the beautiful things that happen on defense. Consistent excellence in the field is what makes good players great, and great players Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners!

One-Piece vs. Two-Piece Bats

Posted by Derek H on Oct 30, 2012 1:17:21 PM

What type of bat is right for my hitting style?

In a baseball and softball bat market of ever increasing technology the recurring questions always come back to one-piece bats vs. two-piece bats. Which is better for a power hitter? Which is better for a contact hitter? What are the benefits to one over the other? Unfortunately there are no black and white answers to these questions because every hitter has their own preferences, but there is a clear difference in constructions and technology between one-piece bats and two-piece bats. We at JustBats.com are here to provide you with the facts to allow you to make the most informed decision possible. Here are the facts.

>>> One-Piece Models <<<           >>> Two-Piece Models <<<

First we should lay the groundwork starting with the basic difference in construction of the two bats. A one-piece bat is developed as one continuous piece of metal. A two-piece bat is created in two sections, the barrel and the handle, which are bonded together. Now that we know how they are constructed we can move onto the science behind the two construction methods.

One-piece bats provide little or no give and have a stiff feel when contact is made with the ball. Due to the fact that one-piece bats have a very minimal amount of flex at contact, little or no energy is lost which results in more power. For this reason, one-piece bats are preferred by stronger players with above average bat speed such as a power hitter.

Two-piece bats provide more flex at contact with the ball. The two-piece construction creates a “whip” effect that results in an increase in bat speed. An increase in bat speed results in an increase in power. For this reason players with average or below average bat speed such as a contact hitter, prefer two-piece bats .

We would encourage everyone to check out our JustBats.com Buyers Guide and JustBats.com Bat Resource Guide for additional information on the differences between one-piece and two-piece bats and other fantastic information such as sizing charts to figure out the appropriate bat size.

Who Is Tommy Hottovy?

Posted by Derek H on Mar 23, 2012 11:57:36 AM

So, who is this Tommy Hottovy guy that everyone around the office keeps talking about? This is a question I heard from one of our newer employees the other day, and it is a fair question. He has a jersey hanging on our wall, a big newspaper article about him; he’s all over ProVision and in the Rundown. Is he famous? The rest of the world may not know who Tommy is yet, but for this small little northland community and our family here at JustBats.com, he is our favorite son. In this article I am going to share with you who Tommy is and how he came to be our favorite son.

Miken Doesn't Play the Game... They Dominate It!

Posted by Derek H on Jan 25, 2012 12:30:24 PM

Miken is back in the baseball world and better than ever. This week we saw the release of the brand new RZR line. The RZR is available in BBCOR, Senior League 10, Youth -12, and Junior Big Barrel -10. When the research and development department at Miken sat down to design this year’s line they really took player input into consideration. In past years players were calling for more pop and big barrels. Well, due to rule changes in just about every league, player’s requests have changed. Now we hear requests for better balance and more bat speed. This is exactly what Miken had in mind with the new RZR line.

The RZR features the T3000 alloy. Outside of the one engineer that might read this blog, no one knows what that means. The T3000 alloy is one of the strongest in the industry. Due to the strength of this alloy Miken was able to create a bat with thinner walls and a bigger sweet spot to enhance consistent performance. With thinner walls in the barrel they were also able to create balanced weight distribution to maximize swing speed. Players asked for balance and speed and that is exactly what they will get with the new RZR line.

After swinging the RZR Adult (ABRZR3) I was very impressed. Most of the first generation BBCOR bats had a tendency to be very end-loaded. That is not the case with the ABRZR3. You can really feel the thinner walls effect on the balance. This bat swings like BESR bats of the past. After about ten hits I was really starting to square the ball up. Miken has always had great grips on their bats, but the new Extreme X-Tack grip really feels great in your hands. It almost felt like the bat had pine tar on it. The thin walls in the barrel were very responsive. You can tell they spent the extra time and money to make this bat perform at a peak level. When you consider it is priced at $199.99, and comes with some state of the art graphics, I would feel confident putting the RZR up against the XL3/S3, CAT5, and 5150. Miken took their time on the release of this bat and I personally was very, very, impressed.
